Verify that you have adequate coverage:

1. Contact your personal car insurance agent to verify that you have adequate liability insurance coverage for the type of car you are renting at your chosen destination.  Canada and Mexico may require a special insurance "rider" to extend liability coverage to those destinations.  Other international destinations may require that you purchase of liability coverage "in-country".  Trucks, motor homes, camper-mobiles, & exotic cars may not be covered under your exisitng personal car liability coverage.  Verify all anticipated drivers in your group will be covered under your liability policy or their own!  The traveler who legally booked the travel, may ultimately be financially responsible for the actions of other drivers who drive any vehicle that the "booking traveler" rented (in some jurisdictions).

General Car Rental Insurance information:

You need more than comprehensive and collision coverage... you need something called RENTAL CAR LOSS OF USE coverage... which pays the rental company charges for the days the car you rented is out of service for repair... (due to damages incurred while the car was in your possession).  THIS COVERAGE IS CRITICAL, and  is normally only available through the car rental agency or from your travel agent, (and your travel agent can normally provide this coverage at a fraction of the cost that the car rental agency will charge you).

OUTSIDE OF USA CAR RENTALS:   Except by special arrangement, (and usually at additional premium cost), MOST CAR INSURANCE COMPANYS SUSPEND LIABILITY COVERAGE for all vehicle rentals outside of the USA… and any available limited CREDIT CARD INSURANCE PHYSICAL DAMAGE COVERAGE FOR RENTAL CARS... is USUALLY SUSPENDED AS WELL for all car rentals outside of the USA. 

When traveling outside of the USA, CLIENTS ALWAYS NEED RENTAL CAR COVERAGE as part of their travel insurance package… or clients need to purchase this insurance coverage from the car rental agency, (often a much more expensive option than through travel insurance). If you are still unsure… please talk to your car insurance agent for details about non-USA car rental coverage.  Sometimes, to obtain adequate coverage at a reasonable cost, some combination of travel insurance and car rental agency rental car coverage is recommended.  CM TRAVEL 4FUN can provide the expertise and guidance you will require to make these insurance decisions.

IN-USA CAR RENTALS… there is a 14 to 15 day maximum rental car coverage time limit imposed by most car insurance companies on all USA-issued car insurance liability policies… (assuming they do cover you in a rental car, and please note that some do not!).  For in-USA vacation car rentals lasting longer than 14 days… additional car rental liability insurance purchased through the car rental agency may be a must. Not sure… ask your insurance agent about your specific policy liability coverage for rental cars in the states that you will be driving the rental car in.

Some Credit Card's may provide limited Car Rental Loss/Damage Insurance Coverage... for car rentals… contact your credit card company to review coverages well in advance of travel - and ask for a written descrition of coverages to review and carry with you.  Please note that these types of policies normally only provide very limited "secondary coverage" - which often have all sorts of limitations on coverage, and they rarely protect the renter from "loss of use" claims by the rental car company. 

Use care... many "off-brand" travel insurance car rental policies do not provide adequate loss of use coverage either!   ONLY QUALITY TRAVEL INSURANCE COVERAGE or Car Rental Company provided Add-on Insurance will consistently provide adequate car rental "loss of use" and physical damage coverage.  

Trailers or other vehicles towed behind a rental vehicle are not covered by any travel insurance policy - nor by any personal car insurance policy - for liability or loss/damage coverage.  Do not tow anything behind a rented vehicle unless you have purchased full coverage additional insurance for the trailer from the rental agency.  Towing an unisured trailer may void all coverage for the towing vehicle as well!

LASTLY… IF YOU ARE RENTING AN RV OR TRUCK or a large passenger van… EVEN INSIDE OF THE USA… talk with your car insurance agent to verify you have liability coverage... most insurance companies do not provide liability coverage for these types of vehicles!  For 'Outside of the USA" RV and Truck rentals... always purchase additional liability insurance from your rental provider for these types of vehicles.  Please note that many travel insurance polices exclude these types of vehicles from loss/damage coverage... be sure to talk to your travel agent if you plan to rent these types of vehicles while traveling.  You may have to purchase loss/damage coverage from the rental agency for these types of vehicles.
