Economic Access To Reliable Cell Phone Services When Traveling:

Most folks live and die by their cell phones these days. While many cell phone contracts may provide reasonable roaming charges for out-of-area travel within the continental USA… most International travel, as well as travel to Canada & Mexico, (and often travel to Hawaii and Alaska) may result in poor or no cell phone reception, and/or out-of-this-world expensive roaming charges.

There are a number of possible solutions to this challenge…

1. In Europe and some other world locations… for those having phones allowing this capability…

You can switch-out your SIM card in your phone with another pre-paid local SIM card and pay local rates… (which overall are a fraction of the international roaming rate for your USA SIM card equipped phone).

If you have a phone that is equipped with a removable SIM card, you can find the SIM card in the phone’s battery compartment… (access to the SIM card usually requires battery removal). SIM card outlet vendors in Europe will usually help you make the switch. Problem… many USA cell phones do not work at-all in Europe… only USA cell phones classified as “world phones” will provide a user the SIM card switching option, (ask your provider or go to the carrier’s WEB site to research whether or not you have a “world phone” which will work in the country you plan to visit). T-Mobile USA and AT&T are carriers whose phones are most frequently “world phones”. Most Verizon and Sprint Nextel phones do not work in Europe (and do not have SIM cards), but they do work in parts of Central and South America.

There are several unique PROBLEMS INVOLVED WITH USING A SIM-card SWITCHED PHONE:

  • Even if you do have a world phone… it has to be unlocked to accept a SIM card from another carrier elsewhere in the world. Some carriers will give you the code upon request to unlock your phone, but most will not. Some cell phone independent stores will do this for you for a fee. This adds another level of difficulty (and potential cost) to making a SIM card switch.
  • SIM card “SWITCHED” phones will not allow anyone to reach you on your cell phone using the number attached to your original SIM card… hence, although you can still get messages on your voice mail… people can no longer call you on your “real” cell phone number. When in the USA, you can get around this by having calls forwarded to a new USA SIM card phone number... but - since this will be a foreign SIM card number - and that most USA carriers do not allow call forwarding to a foreign phone number – the call forwarding option is not available. To get around this problem, you can pay a third party call forwarder like: “TollFreeForwarding.com” to relay calls to your new SIM card equipped phone when you are overseas. This adds yet another hassle and cost to this process.

Does this seem a little too complicated? Well then… consider option #2 below:

2. Through CM TRAVEL 4FUN you can rent an international phone
and have it delivered directly to your home or office before you leave from home on your trip…

and this phone can be programmed to work in up to 200 countries world-wide. No SIM card hassles, no standing in time-consuming lines to rent (and later return) a rental cell phone at your destination, and you can tell family, friends, and business associates what your new international number is before you leave home… thus
providing continuous uninterrupted communication from the moment you leave home until you return.
This type of rental phone will have built-in forwarding capabilities from another cell and/or land-line phone in the USA… and/or it will have a free 1-800# for others to call you from anywhere in the USA (at no charge to them) to wherever you are in the world, (the supplier will tell you what forwarding and/or 1-800# options are available in the country(s) you will be visiting). This rental option has yet another advantage…
avoiding putting your personal phone at risk of loss or fatal damage while you are traveling!
At worst if you lose a rental phone – you have to buy a phone. But… you do not risk losing all of the information (and the time you spent to enter that information) in your existing cell phone! The rates for these rental phone services are more than the SIM card switch-option, but usually much less than roaming charges.
CM TRAVEL 4FUN can also arrange satellite phone and/or a satellite broadband computer modem rentals...
that provide phone and/or high speed computer connectivity nearly anywhere in the world, (even on moving cruise ships).

The cost for satellite phones is actually quite reasonable, and after the first week of travel - it actually becomes fairly cheap. Blackberry support is also available with many of these programs.
Even for travel within the USA, Hawaii, and Alaska… CM TRAVEL 4FUN supplied rental cell and satellite phones may make both economic and practical sense for your travels!
Ask Neal for option details.

3. If you travel a lot to the same international locations… ask Neal about buying an international cell or satellite phone!
