Martha & Mary ==> bridging generations, enriching lives www.marthaandmary.org 360-779-7500 The story of Martha & Mary began in 1891 when the Reverend Ingebright Tollefson, pastor of Poulsbo’s Fordefjord Lutheran Church, saw the need for an orphanage and with church and community assistance built Martha & Mary Children’s Home. The facility served In that capacity until 1954, when the need for elder care became a higher priority. The transition was made and Martha & Mary Nursing Home was established. Today, the not-for-profit health and rehab facility has 190 beds with specialties in long-term care, memory care, hospice and rehabilitative services. On an annual basis, the Health & Rehab Center cares for over 500 seniors and their families. The Martha & Mary Childcare Center was established in 1983 originally to bring affordable childcare to employees of the nursing home. Today, Martha & Mary Children’s Services (MMCS) provides childcare for employees and the public at-large in its Poulsbo and Silverdale Centers. Additionally, MMCS serves children with before and after school activities at all seven North Kitsap elementary schools and two Central Kitsap elementary schools. MMCS cares for over 1,400 children through its programs.Martha & Mary is now the largest child care provider attached to a long term care setting of any organization in the country. Intergenerational programming has long been a cornerstone of life at Martha & Mary.
